Backpack

Backpack

Among the objects found with the Iceman was an almost two-metre-long, U-shaped rod of hazelwood and two narrow wooden boards.

Archaeologists believe that these wooden boards, tied together, made up a type of a backpack, a piece of equipment that is still used in the Alps today to transport wood or other heavy things on the shoulders. Remains of string found near the backpack could have held the frame together.

The actual bag was not recovered. It was probably made of hide, since hide remains and tufts of hair were discovered nearby.
