Coat

Coat

All the clothes the Iceman wore were made of leather or fur. He owned a sort of knee-length coat made of goatskin or sheepskin. Goats and sheep are some of mankind’s oldest domestic animals, and that’s why Ötzi would certainly have had no difficulty finding the right material.

His coat is in a very bad state of repair today: The hide (skin of an animal) has only been partly preserved, so we can’t say for certain whether the coat once had sleeves or a fastener.

However, the sinews used to stitch together the strips of alternating colours is clearly visible. It’s obvious that the coat was made with great care. Perhaps there were already tailors in Ötzi’s day.
